Synopsis
A story of assimilation within a French family of penitents (baalei teshuva) of Sephardic heritage, living in the heart of the Ashkenazi community of Bnei Brak. At its core is a tense struggle between the father, Shmuel, and his son’s Talmud Torah headmaster—one that leads to tragic and unexpected consequences.
It’s a sweltering summer day in Bnei Brak. Rafael has just celebrated his bar mitzvah, and the crucial minor-yeshiva entrance exams are underway. The students of the Talmud Torah are studying diligently. Rafael, considered the most qualified and devoted in his class, is heartbroken. He knows all too well that his family’s background will prevent him from being accepted into the community’s prestigious institutions—no matter how hard he tries.
